Oscar Appiah Kubi is a Lead For Ghana Associate, First Class Economics and Geography graduate of the University of Education Winneba, and Best Graduating Student in both his department and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Oscar brings to his placement an economist's understanding of how systemic change works and a personal history that makes that understanding anything but abstract. Oscar grew up in Darso, a community in the Offinso North Municipality in the Ashanti Region, where access to quality education and meaningful opportunity was not always guaranteed. That environment shaped something in him before he eventually moved to Kumasi. His education began at Ebenezer Methodist Preparatory School in Breman, continued at Asanteman Senior High School where he studied General Arts, and led him to Winneba, where he graduated at the top of his class. As a child, he could not always name exactly what he wanted to become, but the thread running through every version of his dream was consistent: he wanted to solve problems and improve lives. The title was never the point. The impact was. Oscar first heard about Lead For Ghana when a colleague, Mr. Dawuda Anderson, shared a link in a WhatsApp group. He initially assumed it was an ordinary message and almost scrolled past it. He read the application brochure instead, and what he found drew him in immediately. Not just the teaching component, but the leadership development model and the long-term vision for community impact. His time working with Compassion Ghana in underserved areas had already shown him that most systemic problems take root at the grassroots level. Lead For Ghana offered him a place to address them from exactly that point of origin. The statistics on the organisation's website sealed his decision. He applied, was selected, and stepped into a placement that has since confirmed everything he suspected about where the real work needs to happen. The experience has delivered transformation and challenge in equal measure. The most fulfilling moments have come through watching learners grasp concepts they once struggled with entirely, seeing confidence grow where uncertainty previously lived, and witnessing a community begin to open itself to new ideas. The most significant of those new ideas has been financial literacy. Oscar introduced the JA Financial Literacy programme to his students and community members, driven by a conviction he holds as an economist: that Ghana's focus on macroeconomic indicators and urban development consistently neglects the rural communities whose economic health ultimately underpins the whole. Teaching young people and their families how to think about money is not a soft addition to a school curriculum. It is, in his view, a foundational act of economic development. The challenges have been real and unglamorous. Limited stationery, low initial student engagement, and the deep-rooted systemic issues that characterise rural settings have all tested him. There were moments when progress felt painfully slow. Oscar's response has been to stay grounded in purpose, collaborate closely with fellow Associates, and adapt consistently rather than rigidly hold to a plan that the environment has already outgrown. His work has not gone unnoticed. The school's Assistant Headmaster, himself a proprietor of a private school in the area, has specifically commended Oscar and his fellow Associates for their teaching style and classroom engagement. The School Improvement Support Officer has expressed similar appreciation. The community is paying attention. The fellowship has also reshaped Oscar's understanding of what leadership actually demands. He has discovered a resilience in himself that he did not previously know was there, an ability to function effectively even when circumstances are uncertain and resources are thin. He has learned that genuine leadership requires listening as much as directing, and that emotional intelligence is not a secondary skill but a central one. His communication, problem-solving, classroom management, project planning, and community engagement have all grown considerably through the daily demands of the placement. Before his fellowship ends, Oscar's most pressing ambition is to ensure that the financial literacy initiative outlasts his presence. He wants the programme to become self-sustaining, embedded in the school and community in a way that continues to generate impact long after he has gone. He also wants to leave behind measurable academic improvement, and more than that, students who are confident and equipped for whatever comes next. Finishing strong, for Oscar, means leaving behind systems and structures rather than memories of a person who was once there. To his younger self, Oscar's advice is patient and purposeful: "Be patient with yourself and the process. Impact takes time. Don't be discouraged by slow progress or setbacks, they are part of the journey. Build relationships. The connections you make with students, colleagues, and the community will be just as important as the work you do. Stay true to your purpose. There will be challenges, but the impact you make will be worth every effort." Oscar Appiah Kubi grew up in a community that did not always have enough. He is now in a classroom building the kind of economic foundations that could quietly change what enough looks like for the generation coming up behind him.
