Associate Spotlight: Gladys Amekudzi - Shaping the Next Generation

There are people who stumble upon their calling by accident, and then there are people who recognise it the moment it appears. Gladys Amekudzi firmly belongs to the latter. A Lead For Ghana Associate and graduate of the University of Cape Coast, Gladys brings to her classroom a love for teaching that predates the fellowship by years, and a quiet determination to make her time in an underserved community count for something lasting.

Gladys is Voltarian by heritage but was born and raised in Accra. Her early education began at Ebenezer Mission Academy, after which she attended Ghana National College before earning her degree at the University of Cape Coast. Growing up, she dreamed of becoming an influential person who would make a difference in the lives of others. That instinct toward impact, toward helping people discover what they are capable of, shaped everything that followed.

She first encountered Lead For Ghana in 2021, not through a friend or a social media post, but through a billboard she spotted while returning from Makola near the airport. The message stopped her. Two years later, in her final year at the University of Cape Coast, an SMS invitation to apply for national service arrived. For Gladys, the timing felt deliberate. She wanted her national service year to mean something, particularly in the space of education. Lead For Ghana offered exactly that: a structured, purposeful opportunity to serve in communities where that service would matter most.

Adapting to life in a rural community has been the fellowship's most persistent challenge. The absence of reliable telecommunication networks and basic amenities that Gladys had taken for granted in Accra created a disorientation that took time to work through. Her response has been to return, consistently, to the reason she came. On the hardest days, she reflects on her purpose and the impact she hopes to leave behind. That practice has kept her grounded when the conditions around her have not been easy.

What the fellowship has given back in return has been considerable. Gladys has watched her learners grow in confidence and academic ability, and that progress remains her deepest source of fulfilment. The experience has also reshaped how she understands leadership itself. She arrived with a tendency to handle things herself, unconvinced that delegating would yield the same results. The collaborative demands of the fellowship challenged that instinct directly. She has learned to trust her colleagues, to guide rather than control, and to measure success by outcomes rather than by how much she personally managed. Resilience, communication, and adaptability have all sharpened as a result.

Before her fellowship concludes, Gladys has two clear goals. The first is academic: she wants to see genuine, measurable improvement in her learners' ability to read, write, and comprehend. The second is structural and lasting. She is contributing to the development of a B-STEM initiative, a Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics laboratory that will remain in the school long after her placement ends. For Gladys, finishing strong means leaving something behind that continues to work for students she will never meet.

To her younger self, her counsel is grounded and unhurried: "This path will stretch you in ways you cannot fully prepare for, but it will also shape you into a stronger and more intentional person. Do not feel pressured to have everything figured out at the start. Focus on showing up, learning, and staying consistent even when things feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar. Stay rooted in purpose. There will be hard days, but if you remember why you started, you will not lose direction."

Alumni Spotlight: Godfred Frimpong - Making STEM Possible

Godfred Frimpong holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics Education from the University of Education, Winneba, with a background in both Physics and Mathematics Education. He currently serves as a Ghana Education Service Associate and physics and mathematics facilitator at Twereku Ampem Senior High School in Ntotroso, Ahafo Region. Beyond the classroom, he is a STEM educator, technology enthusiast, and advocate for inclusive and innovative education who believes, without reservation, that every learner deserves the opportunity to thrive regardless of background or circumstance. That belief is the engine of his career.

Godfred first came across Lead For Ghana on LinkedIn, where a post caught his attention with a message that spoke directly to something he already felt deeply: that geographical location should never be a barrier to accessing excellent education. For him, excellent education has always meant more than academic achievement. It encompasses the intellectual, social, emotional, and character development of every learner. The fellowship felt like a natural extension of that conviction, and he applied.

When he was a Lead For Ghana Associate, he realised many students carried a deep-seated belief that Physics and Mathematics were simply too difficult for them. Compounding that was the absence of a science laboratory, which left learners with little exposure to practical science and made abstract concepts even harder to grasp. Godfred treated this as the starting point for his work and not a barrier. He organised extra classes in the mornings, evenings, and on weekends, improvised teaching and learning materials using locally available resources, and consistently connected abstract theories to everyday life experiences. Slowly but powerfully, something began to shift.

The results of that sustained commitment were remarkable. In the 2025 WASSCE examinations, the school he taught in recorded a 100% pass rate in Physics, with five students obtaining A1, eight obtaining B2, and seven obtaining B3 out of 20 candidates. Physics was the only subject across the entire school where as many as five students achieved A1. In Core Mathematics, all 80 candidates passed, also achieving a 100% pass rate. Beyond the grades, around six of the 20 General Science students are now pursuing engineering courses at tertiary institutions, young people who had once been convinced that STEM was beyond their reach.

Godfred's impact has extended beyond his own classroom. In December 2025, he was selected as a Technical Coach Volunteer for the Ghana Science Technical and Explorer Prize, a national initiative focused on empowering young STEM innovators. He coached three student teams through the competition, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and problem-solving support. One of those teams, Team Green Builders, qualified for the national finals in Accra with a project centred on designing an eco-brick machine that converts reinforced plastic waste into durable construction bricks, an innovation that addresses plastic pollution and promotes sustainable building practices.

His engagement with Lead For Ghana also deepened him in ways that go beyond instruction. Working with chiefs, headmasters, and community leaders strengthened his public speaking and stakeholder engagement skills, and the experience made him more intentional, more reflective, and more committed to making STEM education accessible to every learner he encounters.

Looking ahead, Godfred's ambitions are clear. He wants to expand access to quality STEM education in underserved communities, integrate programming, data analytics, and digital skills into teaching, and support fellow educators through mentoring and STEM clubs. His broader vision is to nurture a generation of learners who are confident in STEM and equipped with the skills to solve real-world problems and drive meaningful change in their communities.

To those currently serving as Lead For Ghana Associates, Godfred offers this: "Always remember that impact takes time, consistency, and patience. Your encouragement and belief in your students' potential can gradually transform their mindset and performance. Never underestimate the power of showing up consistently.”

Ghana: 400 teachers can be recruited yearly if allowance is scrapped

Executive Director of Africa  Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has criticised the continued payment of teacher trainee allowances, describing the policy as wasteful and financially unsustainable. According to him, the resources being used to fund the allowances could be redirected into more productive areas within the  education sector, particularly the recruitment and payment of additional teachers.
